August 16 2011 shark attack in Seychelles

A newly wed husband got killed by a shark attack, a tragic story that anyone cannot escape. In line with my previous article http://thetravellernurse.blogspot.com/2011/08/august-1-shark.html, another victim of a shark attack ruptured this August.

Mr. Ian Redmond (the victim), and wife Mrs. Gemma Houghton had spent their honeymoon in Seychelles. Enjoying the richness of marine life in the island and the excitement of being newly weds had kept the couple happy. But one unexpected event happened, the wife took a sunbathing when she heard a shout of help coming from the sea. The victim was 20 yards offshore and attacked by an unmerciful shark. It was said that the victim was just snorkeling in the area but drastically the wild shark attacked him. He had lost his left arm and got a ripped left leg, with some bite wound on his stomach. He suffered severe blood loss and wasn't able to be revived by the rescuers.

This is a sad news and is really unforgettable. The Seychelles island which was designed to attract visitors but now it s hunted and everyone is afraid of. The previous shark attack was just the same month (August 1) when a Frenchman got killed with the same attack. Whilst the Seychelles authority tagged that a normal operation day and the death was not because of the shark. Now, they have nothing to hide. As a traveler nurse I am worried because of the downfall of the tourists to the island but really grieved for the loss of our brothers who are suppose to enjoy but did not acclaim the true worth of it.

Any place is a hazard. You should not think that only the islands has this but remember, anything can be dangerous. Your seatmate, classmate, neighbor, or others can be an instrument for something tragic, and it is up for us to take precautions. Tough one life is lost, still you need to move on. Be tougher, but take time. Do not motivate to cope well within a minute because losing someone is indeed a tough one. To the families that the victim had left, we would like to extend our condolence and we offer our prayers for them to recover then.

August 1 2011 shark attack in Seychelles

A french man, Mr. Nicolas Virolle (37 yo), a teacher died August 1 2011 because of a terrifying shark attack. The incident happened in Seychelles, an island intended for vacation. This island lies in the Indian ocean and is really a tourist attraction. Many and more people are seeing the wonders of this islands because of the hectic day in the city life, and supported by the fact that these wonders might soon disappears because of humanistic act as well as the revenge of nature so one cannot resist seeing these wonders before they gone.

The teacher, bumped of too much academic works in his country decided to plunge in the waters of Seychelles to unwind. He stayed in Anse Lazio Beach in Praslin (Praslin-an island in Seychelles) and was able to enjoy the true water nature. But as he was traversing and continuing his snorkeling, the unexpected incident happened. He was attacked by a shark around the area. There were no given detailed info regarding the shark but with the evidence that it had left, it is truly to be considered as a shark attack. He had been attacked on his stomach and legs leaving a massive open wound and excessive bleeding. He died because of impaired integrity on his internal organs causing much loss of blood.

One thing that Seychelles have done wrong was they kept silent and still decided to do the usual operation after the attack. Since there were limited to not at all witnesses, the case was treated like dump. Officials said that the cause of the death was because of engine outbreak or some distinct alibis not pointing to the shark attack. This mainly covers the truth behind the shark attack and still promoting vacation holidays to the island.

The authorities did a safe job, but it ended up causing one life on stake with no specific clues to which was the cause of the death. The family of the victim grieve and cannot accept what happened. But this is a fact not a rumor, a tragedy that we can consider. Our sincere condolences to the family that the victim had left and may God always be with him and to hi family. Only prayer is the weapon that we can offer, and that should keep our lives going. In this world, there is no such thing as certainty, everything may happen unexpectedly.

Twin Sharing basis- let's dig into it

Pissed off with some promotions? Then let us try to find out what Twin Sharing truly means. When you wander on the street this "Twin Sharing" thing is almost all around the places. That is because tourism is the backbone of the country's industry. Without promoting such country cannot prove to the world that they are existing.

We will now reveal what does this term means. First and foremost, this term is widely used by Tourism, Hotels, Packages, Travel Agents, and all related to travel. Twin is defined as having similar characteristics, while sharing is having the other join/use such possession. If there is a newly opened hotel it would normally have its big banners and promotions displayed on its ads at the streets. And you, for unknowingly reason is ignorant to this term. There are several assumptions for this term and this will be the following:

  • may be interpreted as having same beds
  • may be interpreted as having same rooms
  • may be interpreted as having same bed and same room
  • worst is having physical twins inside the room
Then, if you have those assumptions you do not need to worry. This just means that your forehead is thinking and thus you are trying to break the code of this term.

The history of this term began when the Tourism also began. This term is widely used because of its legal capture. I will explain what is legal capture. Legality, means something in line with the law. Legal capture is the right description for this term as this imposes a deeper meaning of it. A hotel won't say that we used this legally because it is absurd, they use this term safely as it sounds and confusingly as it is to understand.

Getting to the root. The true meaning of Twin Sharing is- a room that is intended for 2 people and not less than 2 only. Still confused? , then let me elaborate. When you see twin sharing basis, this automatically means that the rate for that is good for 2 persons sharing the same room. Meaning, if you want to go single only then that rate won't apply. The same applies with having more than 2 persons trying to get the same quotation, then the rate will also change.

The key to understand this is just to remember that if you ever see "twin sharing basis" you should conclude that the rate advertised if for 2 persons only. Whatever the rate us that would be the rate for both persons. That should not be considered as rate per person but rather the rate of the room for 2 persons.

Hope this simple trick has been unlocked to you all, and always remember "ignorance does not excuse no one"-Anonymous.

Nursing Boards: The role of the Hankies

If you are the type of person who cannot get out of the house without having a Hankie with you then you are not alone. Perspiration is normal and when you are situated in a Tropical country then having one hankie is truly a need. When taking some exams you might be perspiring more because of the pressure and the feeling towards having the result. I'll share a quick tip on how to manage such.

If you are going to take a major exam (Nursing Boards), then you must have a hankie with you so to suppress your emotions. Yes to suppress, I am telling this because of the body reaction to stress or if it is exposed to stress, the sweat glands will coordinate with the brain signals thereby triggering the release of sweat. If you sweat normally, then just bring 1 hankie with you or two will do. But if you are like me whose hands are sweating as well as the soles of the feet once exposed to some stress then I will suggest to bring more than 4 or may be 5. Since you have multiple pockets with you then you can put one hankie on each pocket.

You need to make use of the number of pockets you have, and on the actual exam Walla! then you can use them eagerly. When the exam would start then, you need to place 2 hankies at the table, one for your forehead to wipe the other to your hand. The rest will serve as back ups (you won't go to battle without ammo reserves aren't you?). When too much sweating occurs then you need not to worry you have back ups with you. The amount of sweat is actually affected by certain factors. When your position is near the window then the amount will be less, but if you are seated in the middle and you have limited ventilation, then you need to scrap all the rough so you can manage. I am talking about the situation in the Phils. where exam rooms do not have AC's on it.

So that's it. The role of the Hankies, and guess what? There is one more feature that you can't afford to miss with the hankie is in you and you got stuck with a tearing lady, then you can offer her a wipe. And that's all way that it should be. :)

A CPR tip from a nurse entrepreneur

Isn't it a challenge to save someone's life? A job intended for doctors but a normal person can do? Then are you up with the challenge? - I am basically talking about the CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Nowadays there are more and more people needing help and it is a must to be a good samaritan.

I am going to give a tip here that you can use anywhere else not just in the big US state. And this is the standard that the Emergency Medical Team is using. You might have knowledge from other sites and every time you visit you receive different strategies and lessons. From basic to advance then I shall reveal now.

Hints:
At the scene, do the ADPIE in nursing.
  • Assessment- this will include calling local emergency numbers for medical assistance
  • Diagnosis
  • Planning
  • Implementation
  • Evaluation
ASSESSMENT
For the assessment, note ABC.
  • Airway- check air passages
  • Breathing- check the rise and fall of the chest
  • Circulation-check the nailbeds, eyes, and soft tissues for blood distribution
DIAGNOSIS
-unresponsivenes

PLANNING
-CPR plan

IMPLEMENTATION
--CPR action

1. Give initial 2 breaths to check air passage (each should last about 2 seconds). If chest rises then you can successfully do the CPR continuously, if chest does not rise suspect for obstruction. Place patient sideways and try to insert your index finger removing the obstruction from the patients mouth, this is called "blind finger sweep" the purpose is to see if we can continue CPR or not. Do not do CPR once there is obstruction as this will lead to push further obstruction.

2. Given the 2 initial breaths, perform the proper pump now. Locate the xyphoid process of the patient, this is usually located at the bottom tip of the sternum (the central bony projection of the chest). Then from that point xyphoid process move up by 2 inces and place you palm. Remember to be at the patients right side so you can place your palm covering the left side (since our heart is mostly located on the left).

3. Pump for 30 with 2 breaths at the end. This means that you do pump 30 times and at the end of each cycle  deliver 2 blows of air to the victims mouth. When delivering the air blows make sure that you will do head tilt chin lift so the air will successfully pass through. The depth of the push should be 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches for a normal adult. Pump at 100/minute so to revive the patient.

4. This 30 pumps ratio is the same with one man CPR of two man CPR. In two man CPR, the one will pump and the other will deliver the blows. Continue until help arrives and until patient can recover. But please note not to overuse your strength as this could lead to rib fracture.

Notes:
  • CPR can damage the ribs causing rib fractures if not delivered successfully
  • Always be alert and ask others to help
  • Doing CPR is really tiring seems that you have gone for an extensive workout
  • Always put prayer in your action, nothing is impossible when you are asking help from above
EVALUATION
-status of the patient, hand him/her a glassful of soda or energy drink for acute recovery.

So, that is my personal rescue strategy doing CPR. This may be different from others but this will surely help you a lot!

Does anybody know where Fiji is?

If you are thinking about a Japanese city when you heard Fiji, then you are absolutely wrong. Fiji is a republic country and is an archipelago (comprises of many islands). I just came across with this country when one of my pax was looking for such destination for his honeymoon. This country was believed to be formed by some volcanic eruptions 150-200 million years ago and is is obviously showing with its many island state.

I admit this was my first time knowing Fiji and its existence, really for sure and I have made some research on this. The country is ruled by a President, their currency is Fijian dollars (FJD), with 4 major languages namely: English, Fijian, and Fiji Hindi. The economic growth of the country is determined by their rich natural resources specially marine life. Knowingly because of its location in the south pacific ocean, it has one of the richest supply of minerals and marine resources. The capital of the country is Suva and it has its own International Airport. People have divided religion with Christian as the major, then followed by Hindi, and some Muslims. Because of the diversity of each islands, the country is divided into 4 parts North, South, East, West whilst their central part is lively Suva its capital city. Residents inside enjoys mostly with Rugby and Football their major sports.

One interesting fact in Fiji is the tourism promotion. Many, I mean still not known by all but this place is truly a great blessing from above. With the fine seashore, island hopping, scuba, snorkeling, and island excursions, I am sure that you will never forget this place once you visited.

Travel Tip: Note that the touristic cities will be Nadi and Denarau Islands. The airport is Nadi International Airport. I can recommend Fiji Resort by Hilton to stay in providing you 5 star luxury comfort and nature relaxation.

The present conversion in Saudi

"Money keeps the world rolling". I am earning Saudi Riyals here in the kingdom and is satisfied with the load. I am not that kind of rich guy that has everything in his hand. I just have enough to send to my family in the Philippines and keep my siblings on their college courses.

Present Conversion:
1 SAR = 11.30 PHP

The biggest question now is the trending of Riyal into Peso. From a good rating of 12PHP=1 Riyal in the past 10 years and now it went down to 11.30. For me this is fine because I can still survive, what I am worrying is the number of people living here "kabayans" who are really struggling hard to cut it up to normal. With the ongoing economic crisis worldwide, suppliers lowering down as compared before and the government wanting to over rule its people then there is a mere change of getting it back.

What we can do now is just to face the reality and perhaps work hard the same as before. Luck is just there and anybody can grab their respective opportunity. Though we are facing the hardships in life, yet still there is a place for laughter. A laughter that was once borrowed and now still we are owing for it. Let us together face these challenges and should be proud to shout out our personal motives. Keep surviving! Keep rolling!
